Material pertains to Howard Bryan's bi-weekly Albuquerque Tribune column “Off the Beaten Path” which ran from 1953 to 1990. This collection contains clippings of those columns as well as the correspondence and research material he used to produce the column. Material includes awards, photographs and miscellaneous items.

Biographical Information
Howard Bryan was born in Ohio in 1920 and arrived in Albuquerque in 1948. He started working for the Albuquerque Tribune in 1948 and his first “Off the Beaten Path” column appeared on January 27th of 1953. In these columns he wrote about mostly historical places, people, and events in New Mexico with a particular focus on the last half of the 19th century. He gathered material for his columns from interviews of old-timers, correspondence with various knowledgeable individuals, research of historical records, and a variety of other sources. Bryan authored seven books, mostly in his later years. He received much recognition and many awards culminating in the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 1994.
