Scope and Content

Contain research materials of historian Jerry D. Thompson accumulated while writing his book A Civil War History of the New Mexico Volunteers and Militia. Most of the materials are photocopies collected from other sources. The collection also contains photographs, newspapers, maps, as well as some personal papers. The personal papers of Jerry D. Thompson contain correspondence as well as hand-written and typed notes. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by surname of correspondent. Research files on individuals are organized alphabetically by surname. Photocopied correspondence of participants in the Civil War in New Mexico also are arranged alphabetically by surname. Photocopied military records are organized by military command and location. Photocopied publications (newspapers, journal articles, and book sections) are organized by publication. Other sources of unpublished research are organized by person and theme. The collection contains printed finding aids from various archives that Thompson used while researching the war as well as a series of archaeological reports are organized by location. Photographs depict tombstones of some of the persons researched by Thompson. Maps consist of photocopies of period maps of New Mexico, some battle maps, and a large map of the Santa Fe area.

Biography / History

Jerry D. Thompson is a writer and history professor at Texas A&M International University, Laredo, Texas. He was born in Springerville, Arizona and raised in Quemado, Catron County, New Mexico, now an unincorporated community with a population of about 200. Thompson earned a BA from Western New Mexico University in 1964, an MA from University of New Mexico in 1968, and his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1982. Since 1971, Thompson has written numerous articles for a variety of historical journals, authored or edited more than 20 books on the American Civil War in the Borderlands and other Borderlands topics. His writing has earned numerous awards and nominations and in 2001, Texas A&M International University named Thompson Regents Professor of History.

The Jerry D. Thompson papers document research done by Thompson on the Civil War in New Mexico. The collection includes extensive archival research of wartime correspondence and military records, as well as other published sources on the Civil War in New Mexico. Also included are maps, photographs, finding aids, and Thompson's correspondence.
