An non-profit organization, the American Association of University Professors' (AAUP) mission is to "advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good."

The AAUP was founded by Arthur O. Lovejoy, a philosopher at Johns Hopkins, and John Dewey, in reaction to Edward Ross losing his job at Stanford University in 1900 due to his views on immigrant labor and railroad monopolies. They organized the first AAUP meeting in 1915 to ensure academic freedom for university faculty members.

More specific history and information about the local chapter is not known except in review of this collection's materials.
