Biographical Information
W. Calvin Brown came to Albuquerque in December of 1882 as an appointed Lieutenant in the Territorial Militia. He traveled and photographed widely over northwestern New Mexico and Arizona. He made test prints in cyanotype and card pictures for sale of such locations as Johnson's Canyon, Canyon Diablo, the Hopi area and the Mojave Indians. He also sold photographs by others including Charles Lummis. For a period of time in the late 1880s he put his studio on Gold Avenue in Albuquerque under the management of E. Gregg while he served as a Marshal. He had a brief partnership with George A. Wonfor before selling out to William Henry Cobb and moving to Virginia where he opened a studio in Farmville.
