Scope and Content

This small collection of early photographs in the Las Vegas area includes photos by James Furlong, Theron Crispell and also their joint efforts under Furlong and Crispell. Images are listed by negative number and brief description. Included in the collection are 32 glass plate negatives. Furlong and Crispell images are designated with an (FC).

Biographical Information

James N. Furlong is noted in a promotional pamphlet on Las Vegas published ca. 1900-1902 as "the pioneer photographer of Las Vegas" arriving from Massachusettts in 1875. While away in Texas and California on cattle buisiness in 1885-1990 he left Theron Cripsell to operate the photo studio under the joint name of Furlong and Crispell. Furlong served as postmaster in Las Vegas from 1879-1885 and operated a stationery and book store. Theron Cripsell operated the Furlong and Crispell studio until starting his own studio in 1891. Crispell was an officer of the Las Vegas Rod and Gun Club and was appointed fish warden for San Miguel County in 1892.
