Scope and Contents

On CD 289A Cobos seems to have assembled clips of stories and songs by different people, recorded by himself or his students, but not identifying them clearly, perhaps prepared this for his class or a program. Cobos, 1970: Danny L' Esperance, b. 1956 or 1954, Sororro, NM (See CD 48 for similar recording, good recording, woman singing, with guitar accompaniment, song include:) 1. Rosita Alvirez, a corrido (at a dance she slights her boyfriend Hipolito, resenting it he shoots her, women, crime, muerte, death); 2. Juan Charrasqueado, a corrido (makes out with all the girls, until one day a the bar the relatives of his last victim kill him, sexual exploitation, women, muerte, death, crime); 3. El hijo desobediente, a corrido (boy Felipe disobeys father, dies in fight with a rival, muerte, death, discipline, family); 4. Gabino Barreras, a corrido (he deflowers many girls, many illegitimate children, until one day comes out of a girl's home shouting Viva Zapata, and their relatives gun him down, women, murder, crime, death, muerte); 5. El dia de San Juan, corrido (St. John's day, June 24, tragedy at a dance, jilted boy friend Juan kills his girl friend Michaela and his rival Simon, women, crime, murder, jealousy); 6. Flor del Rio Grande, corrido (love story of boy and girl friend named Flor, who died, women); 7. Un pobre, no mas (love song, cancion, a girl puts off her boy friend because he is poor, women, poverty, marriage); 8. Ojitos verdes (cancion, song, boy's love for his girl friend with green eyes, who has left him, women).

Scope and Contents

Turner, 1970: Edwin Berry, Tome, NM. (Good recording.) 1. Refranes, sayings by Berry, time and fortune; 2. Que bonitas mananitas (love song, good recording, beautiful mornings, mi Lupita, women); 3. Song, Indita de Cleofas Griego (good recording, corrido, more verses were remembered and contributed by Jose Aragon Lucero and he worked with Berry on this indita, Berry using drum. Here he talks about his friend, maestro Ruben Cobos, who taught school in Los Lunas, New Mexico); 4. Cantadita, his little song, Abrochate el zapato, says a man's girl needs to learn to keep house and cook, take care of husband, love song, women); 5. Cantadita, little song of a boy collecting pennies and dimes for singing for others, en la plaza vieja, about Ignacio Sanchez Romero); 6. Cuento de Padre Benigno Cardenas (story, at Tome, New Mexico, said it was noted in the Revista Catolica magazine, Catholic Church schism, talks about Empress Josefina, true story, priest sick and pig came in, pulled him out, he went on to Taos, San Luis, Saint Louis, Missouri); 7. Song, Indita de Jose Luis (mentions Antonio Gabaldon, he is whistling parts of the song; from here on he sings fragments of several songs he remembered, rhyming, using his drum, humming parts of them, one about man, whose father was Rafael Castillo, one about an error, mentira, hambre, cama, semana, conejo on the roof, chimney, etc.); 8. Dichos and song fragments, sayings, San Jose, carpintero, sayings of los pastores, shepherds, agua, charco, do best with where and what you have, etc. Berry cont. on CD 289B.
