Rachel Walcott Papers,

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 543 BC

Scope and Content

The Rachel Walcott papers represent a bureaucratic dialogue between various government agencies concerning the murder of Samuel T. Walcott and James McNally, allegedly by two Navajo Indians on March 31, 1884, in the Territory of Arizona. The Indians, Osh-ka-ni-ne and Ten-nai-tso-si were pursued and arrested on July 10, and July 18, 1884.

Interestingly, McNalley's remains were never recovered and this has led to the rise of local folk tales.

The collection is comprised of 38 documents that give insight into early policies exercised by the War Department, the Department of the Interior Office of Indian Affairs, the United States Indian Service's Navajo Agency and others.

The collection reflects multi-cultural misunderstandings and a general unwillingness of two cultures to recognize differing cultural value systems.
