History

The Tuesday Literary Club was formed in 1901, for the "intellectual and social improvement" of Albuquerque women. Meeting every other Tuesday in a member's home, the club members would give short presentations on various subjects, such as works of fiction and non-fiction, drama, authors, art, artists, and current events, among others. According to the groups constitution, membership fees in 1901 were set at one-dollar per year, and club duties were compulsory. Since 1901, the club has kept it's bi-monthly schedule from May to November every year without fail. This schedule continues to this day.

The origins of the Tuesday Literary Club are very much in keeping with the spirit of "progressive reform" that colored many of activities of late 19th century/early 20th century women's organizations. Throughout the years, many of Albuquerque's women-of-letters have belonged to the club, as did the wives of prominent educators, businessmen and professionals.
