Biography / History
The Ribbon Project, conceived by Justine Merritt in 1982, became a national peace project. The goal was “to protect the earth, to prevent the bomb; to work and pray for Peace." Merritt’s idea to tie a peace ribbon around the Pentagon- a symbol of peace encircling a symbol of war, garnered support in all 50 states and several countries around the world. National and state chapters of Church Women United were major participants in The Ribbon Project.
New Mexico’s participation was coordinated by Judy Long of Las Vegas and Church Women United (NM). New Mexicans contributed approximately 178 hand-stitched panels, each 18 x 36 inches.
On August 6, 1985, marking the 40th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the project reached its fruition. The 17,000-panel, 15 mile-long ribbon was tied around the Pentagon.
