History

In 1959, artist June Wayne submitted a proposal to the Ford Foundation for the establishment of a workshop devoted to the revival and preservation of the art of lithography. Wayne's proposal was accepted and Tamarind Lithography Workshop was established in Los Angeles, California. It opened on July 1, 1960 with Clinton Adams as associate director and Garo Antreasian as master printer. As a non-profit organization the workshop trained a small group of master printers to work in conjunction with artists in order to produce lithographic prints. The workshop also provided facilities, materials, and services. In 1963, a preliminary training program was instituted at the John Herron Art Institute. Garo Antreasian was in charge of the training, and when he left Herron and joined the Art Department at University of New Mexico, the basic training was transferred to Albuquerque. By 1969, Tamarind had achieved its initial goals. June Wayne requested and received a final grant from Ford to establish the Tamarind Institute as a separate division of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico
