Charles W. Dawson Photograph Album
Scope and Content
The collection consists of a photo album documenting the buildings designed by architect, Charles W. Dawson. Photos are black and white and sepia. Early projects were commissioned in Lima, OH (Lima Memorial Hall and the Carnegie Library). Much of Dawson’s work was centered in Muskogee, OK, including schools, churches, a firehouse, office buildings, and hospital. Particularly notable are additions to Bacone Indian University, built 1922-1924 (science hall, men’s dormitory, and dining hall) and the Murrow Indian Orphan’s home. Dawson collaborated on both of these projects with the Architectrual Department of the American Baptist Home Mission Society.

Biographical Information
Charles W. Dawson was born in 1867 in Plainfield, NJ. He attended Haverford College, PA, and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1888), where he received his architectural training. He interned with Henry Van Brunt in Kansas City, MO, and then settled down in Lima, OH. He received commissions for public, private, and commercial buildings. Dawson was joined in his practice by Thomas D. McLaughlin in 1906. By 1910, the firm, Dawson, Kedian, & Valeur was operating in Muskogee, OK. At times in his career, Dawson worked independently. Following a move to Corpus Christi, TX, Dawson was commissioned to work on new buildings for the campuses of Bacone Indian University and the Murrow Indian Orphans’ Home, back in Muskogee. Dawson, the first president of the Oklahoma Chapter, A.I.A., died in 1928.
